Sample details

The Slovak PBC study aims to examine chemical exposures in relation to neuro-behavioral and immunologic development. The study involves a cohort of births from two districts in eastern Slovakia: one in Michalovce, where a chemical manufacturing plant that operated from 1959 through the mid-1980's improperly discharged large quantities of contaminated waste into the surrounding area; the other in Svidnik, a comparative region without direct exposure to this pollution. Pregnant women were recruited during 2002 to 2004, and their children were followed up from birth to 18 months of life.
