Sample details

The SMC aims to assess the influence of lifestyle and genetic factors on middle-aged and elderly women in Sweden. The study began in 1987 by mailing invitations to women in Uppsala and Västmanland counties, resulting in a cohort of 61,433 participants aged between 38 and 76 years. Participants have been followed-up continuously, including in 1997, 2008, and 2009. Additionally, a clinical sub-cohort was formed in Uppsala between 2003 and 2009, involving 5,032 women under 85, and another group of 305 women over 85 was assessed between 2012 and 2013. A second clinical sub-cohort was established in Västmanland from 2010 to 2019, involving 2,630 women, with both cohorts still being followed up periodically.
