The baseline survey within the population part of the SNAC study was started in all areas in March 2001 and was completed in Blekinge and Nordanstig in 2003 and in Skåne and Stockholm/Kungsholmen in 2004, Sweden. The national study SNAC - The Swedish National Study on Aging and Care, includes four participating areas: SNAC-Blekinge, SNAC Kungsholmen, SNAC Nordanstig and SNAC Skåne (GÅS). In all four areas, a research center conducts a population study and a health care system study. In total, approximately 8,300 people were examined in the four areas. Every 3 years, only participants who are 78 years or older are called back for re-examinations. However, every 6 years all participants aged 60 and over are called back for re-examination. New cohorts 60 years and 81 years old are invited every 6 years. These cohorts are also offered re-examinations every 3 and 6 years respectively.
