The SPAH study aimed to identify biological mechanisms during pregnancy that contribute to physical and mental health problems. Over 600 pregnant women in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America, were recruited from 2018 to 2022. Participants attended in-person data collection visits in their second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and following delivery, placentas were collected, and data were collected from electronic medical records. The children of participants are being followed up through the SPAH Kids study.
