SPAN aimed to investigate the prevalence of symptoms of specific personality disorders in a representative community sample. At baseline, SPAN included 1,630 adults recruited from St. Louis and the surrounding suburban areas in the United States of America via recruitment calls made by purchasing telephone records from a private sampling firm. SPAN participants were between the ages of 55 and 64 years at baseline and spoke fluent English. Follow-up assessments of personality and personality problems, social functioning, and marital adjustment, as well as physical and mental health, are being conducted at regular 2.5-year intervals.
