Sample details

The STEPS Study examines child health and well-being by employing a multidisciplinary approach, investigating the precursors and causes of various conditions. The cohort comprises all mothers who gave birth in the Hospital District of Southwest Finland from January 2008 to April 2010 along with their children, totalling almost 10,000 mothers and 10,000 children. Within this cohort, a subset participates in intensive follow-up, consisting of 1,797 mothers and 1,827 children, recruited during the first trimester of pregnancy or after delivery. The mothers had a mean age of 30.2 years and the majority had no previous births, however most did have previous pregnancies. Among the births, 51.3% were male.
