SAGE is a birth cohort and nested case-control study investigating the origins of asthma and other atopic diseases in a cohort of children born in Manitoba, Canada in 1995. The cohort included 13,980 children followed-up using longitudinal healthcare records from birth until age 7 to 8 years. From a mail-out survey of all households in the SAGE birth cohort, a subsample were selected for the nested case-control study at age 7 to 10 years comprising 246 children with asthma and/or allergies, and 477 children without either. For the control sample, children from rural, low-income areas, and First Nation communities were oversampled to ensure representation from diverse environmental exposures. Participants in the case-control study were assessed again at age 11 to 14 years.
