TARS aims to explore the relationship qualities and the subjective meanings that motivate adolescent behavior. Over 1,300 participants were recruited from schools in Lucas County, Ohio, in the United States of America. The sample was stratified and random, with oversampling of Black (25%) and Hispanic (11%) respondents. The participants were aged 12 to 18 years at recruitment, and their parents were also interviewed. As of 2024, there have been 8 periods of data collection with high response rates maintained.
