Sample details

More than 2,500 participants have participated in the original TRAILS for over 20 years, and TRAILS NEXT is an add-on study that focuses on the children of the participants. This study involves assessments of parents and/or children during pregnancy and when the children are 3, 30, 54, and 72 months old. TRAILS NEXT helps to understand how parental characteristics influence the development of their children. As of June 2021, 368 TRAILS respondents (74% female) had entered TRAILS NEXT, with a total of 436 children, of whom 263 are firstborn, 147 are secondborn, 23 are thirdborn, and three are fourthborn. Even though all TRAILS participants are roughly of the same age, they have children at different ages. That said, TRAILS participants were on average 28 years old when entering TRAILS NEXT with their first child.
