This longitudinal field study investigated risk factors of child maltreatment among adolescent parents from Washington, United States. The sample included 535 pregnant and/or parenting adolescents who were recruited from educational and social programs in the state of Washington between October 1988 and 1989. Participants were 17 years old or younger at the time of their first pregnancy, and aged 21 years old or younger when they completed the baseline survey. Follow-up data were collected on 315 participants between 1990 and 1991, and approximately 1 year later, data were collected from Child Protective Service case records.
