VlaVla aimed to investigate the effects of age, sex and allergy tendency on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in both rural and urban populations in the Netherlands. In 1965, participants aged 40 to 64 were recruited from rural Vlagtwedde and urban Vlaardingen in the northeast and western Netherlands. In 1967, a younger group aged 15 to 39 was recruited from Vlagtwedde, and from Vlaardingen in 1969. All Vlagtwedde participants were followed up in 1970, 1973, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, and 1989, whilst Vlaardingen participants were followed up in 1972, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1987, and 1990 when the study ended.
