Sample details

This study examined the mortality experience of psychiatric patients in the state of Western Australia, Australia, and compared these with the general population. A population-based register of contacts with mental health services was used. Data sources include the mental health information system records (a register of patients in psychiatric hospitals, other hospitals, and community mental health services), and death registrations. Almost 300,000 people were in contact with mental health services in Western Australia between 1983 and 2007.
