WHICAP II recruited elderly adults from the Washington Heights and Inwood communities in northern Manhattan, New York, United States of America. Participants were at least 65 years old, Medicare beneficiaries, living in the designated communities, spoke English or Spanish, and could give informed consent to participate in the study. 602 participants from the original WHICAP I cohort were also included in the study. This resulted in a baseline cohort of over 2,700 participants at baseline. Participants were from Caribbean Hispanic, African-American, and Caucasian backgrounds and had various socioeconomic circumstances.
