Sample details

The core SAGE collects data on adults aged over 18 years, with an emphasis on populations aged over 50 years, from nationally representative samples in China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russian Federation, and South Africa. The focus of the study was to understand ageing in different populations, with younger participants for comparisons. Over 63,000 participants were enrolled, with around 19,000 aged over 50 years and approximately 55% of the total cohort were female. The baseline survey was carried out between 2002 - 2004, with the first follow up between 2007 - 2010, then 2014-2015 and 2018-2019. New participants were added at follow ups to maintain representativeness.
