Sample details

The WMD is a nationwide registry-based cohort study comprising 9,428,526 individuals born before 1985 who lived in Sweden in 1980 and/or 1990. Participants were passively recruited through administrative registers starting in 1981, without direct contact or advertising, using census and population data maintained by Swedish authorities. In addition to the main WMD cohort, the study also includes the Stockholm Metropolitan Study (SMS) cohort of 14,294 individuals born in 1953 and living in Stockholm in 1963, and the RELINK53 multigenerational cohort of 2,390,753 individuals added in 2017 and 2018 to enable extended follow-up of family members. Participants in the WMD have been followed annually from 1981 to 2009 using linked registry data, including income, education, health, and mortality records.
