The ZiBFUS is a cohort study of mothers and their infants from birth through the first years of life in Zithulele, Eastern Cape, South Africa. From January to April 2013, a cohort of 470 sequential births in the area surrounding Zithulele Hospital in the OR Tambo District of the Eastern Cape was recruited and followed up at home at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months post birth. At baseline, the mean age of mothers was 24.9 years, and 44% of their children were born female.
