Sample details

ZUTE was a longitudinal investigation of chronic disease risk factors among men from Zutphen, a town in the eastern Netherlands, comprising two cohorts with over 1200 participants. The original cohort was recruited in 1960 as part of the Seven Countries Study and included 878 men aged 40 to 59 years, randomly sampled from the town. In 1985, the study was expanded by re-inviting the 555 surviving members of the original cohort and recruiting an additional 384 newly sampled men aged 64 to 84 years. The original cohort consisted of middle-aged men born between 1900 and 1920, while the newly recruited 1985 cohort included elderly men from the same birth range. Participants were followed up annually from 1960 to 1973, once in 1977/78, and then every five years from 1985 to 2000.
